ASIBA now has 22 establishments who are members. With Nancy, Rouen and Strasbourg, this is a most satisfactory increase in membership and shows that ASIBA is gaining greater recognition.

The 3e Congrès of the FDEI (Fondation du Developpement de l’Education Internationale) under the presidency of M. François-Xavier D’Aligny took place on 14th and 15th October 2010. The venue was in Sèvres where the Sections Internationales de Sèvres (SIS) were celebrating their fiftieth anniversary. This celebration coincided with the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the OIB itself. The President of ASIBA outlined the role of ASIBA in funding the extra training courses during the year. Adrian Barlow’s speech underlined the importance Cambridge CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) attaches to training as well as moderation. He also emphasised CIE’s commitment to the OIB. It was the occasion for CIE to unveil its new brochure on the OIB, which will considerably enhance the visibility of the examination, particularly as far as universities are concerned.

The new website became fully operational at the end of 2010 with a full translation in French. The Cambridge OIB Handbook is now up and running in both English and French on the ASIBA site and the updates have been made for this year’s examination, with the French to follow shortly. A big thank you to Derek Erb for managing the site so professionally!

The end of 2010 also saw the retirement of both Glenys Kennedy and Philip Shaw-Latimer, both of whom have given an enormous amount over the years to the OIB community. Philip in particular, as one of the founders of the OIB back in 1984-5 and in recent years as Schools Chair, has done a fantastic job to set the OIB on the right course for the future. Philip was awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours in Britain, which is a great honour and reflects back very positively on the OIB and the OIB community. We all wish them a very happy retirement and hope they will continue to be in contact to lend us their advice and support from time to time.

As far as the OIB itself is concerned, it continues to grow, with more sections wishing to offer it. ASIBA will have an important role to play for the foreseeable future in continuing to fund the increasingly important training meetings for teachers of History-Geography and English twice a year, in hosting the web site and in promoting and defending the examination.
